Trophy contest winners named

Nick Hopmann of League City and Don Bayer of Lexington will be pulling the trigger on new rifles after taking top honors in this year's Uvalde Leader-News/ Oasis Outback Trophy Buck Contest.
Hopmann won the statewide division of the contest with the 12-point buck he killed Nov. 20 in Zavala County. The deer, which had a 23-inch spread, scored 176 6/8.
Hopmann will receive a Ruger MK II .270 donated by JW Pawn.
Bayer captured the best buck killed in Uvalde County category with the deer he killed Nov. 11. Bayer's buck, which had 24 points and a 16 3/8-inch spread, scored 181 5/8.
First State Bank of Uvalde will present a Remington 700 BDL 25-06 to Bayer for his winning entry.
In the widest spread division, Mark Cooper of Loxahatchee, Fla., will take home a 900-pound capacity protein feeder donated by Big Horn Metals for the buck he killed Jan. 5 in Uvalde County. Cooper's deer had a 23 5/8-inch spread.
Randy ??? of is the winner of a .17 HMR rifle, donated by Oasis Outback, for killing the buck with the most points.
Christian Hernandez of Uvalde will receive a 20-gauge single barrel shotgun from Regency, Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac & GMC for winning the best spike category (kids 12 and younger). The youngster's first deer killed Dec. 8 in Uvalde County had a combined horn length of 15 6/8 inches.
“Congratulations to the winners in this year's contest,” said newspaper publisher Craig Garnett. “Despite less than optimal conditions with the ongoing drought, we still had a large number of quality entries.”
All prizes must be claimed by March 1, 2007.
