Saturday morning the 2008 Uvalde County Junior Livestock Show and Sale board of directors sponsored a premium sale, resulting in a total sale amount of $260,250.25, more than the $243,809.35 last year, and substantially more than 10 years ago when the final sale amount came in at $160,787.50.
In a premium sale, exhibitors receive a premium for their hard work and effort. The price announced at the fall of the auctioneer's gavel is the premium afforded the exhibitor. The amount charged to the buyer's account is the full price if the buyer wants possession of the animal. Otherwise the buyer is charged the gavel price less the floor price.
The steers were sold by the pound, hogs and lambs were sold by the head, rabbits and goats were sold by the head as well or unit in the case of a pen of three. A pen of three angora goats or rabbits was considered as one animal unit.
