Winds blow up flames

SMOKING HOUSE - Firefighters with Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department battle a house fire (above) in the 200 block of West Mulberry Street Friday shortly after 10 a.m. Firefighters, including Paul Stephens (left), responded to the call at about 10 a.m. and found the house already fully engulfed in smoke. Fire Chief Gene Ayala said the majority of the damage was in the kitchen. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department stayed busy Thursday keeping grass fires under control in the face of high winds.

The first fire was at 10:15 a.m., said Firefighter Rodney Deorsam Friday. He said the fire that was about 20 miles west of Uvalde on U.S. Highway 90 burned approximately 10 acres.

A second grass fire was called in at 10:25 a.m. Thursday, this one about three miles west of the Nueces River Bridge on U.S. 90.

Deorsam said both fires were in rocky areas and just ran out of fuel, which is pretty much what saved us. Mother Nature helped us out on both of them.

At 11:31 a.m. Thursday, firefighters were called to a small grass fire in Deer Valley off U.S. Highway 83 North. The homeowner got it put out before we could get there, Deorsam said.

A short time later, at 11:52 a.m., firefighters responded to County Road 108 for a brush pile fire that Deorsam said was set inadvertently. They were afraid it would get out of hand, he said.

At 7:06 p.m. Thursday, Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department joined the La Pryor Volunteer Fire Department in battling a 200-acre grass fire near La Pryor. Deorsam said Uvalde sent four trucks and 18 men turned out to help with some actually going to fight the fire and others waiting at the station for further instructions.

Also on Thursday, Uvalde Firefighter Justin Schmidt joined the Sabinal Volunteer Fire Department in fighting a grass fire on Texas Highway 1796 north of D'Hanis in Medina County. It wasn't big, said Schmidt, about 250 acres.

He said Sabinal went to help D'Hanis because they were in transit for another fire they were working with Yancey.

Sabinal sent three trucks and D'Hanis had three trucks out there, he said.

At 4:37 a.m. Friday, Deorsam said the department was paged out for the smell of smoke in a house in the 500 block of North Getty Street. He said the smoke turned out to be coming from a central furnace.

At 10 a.m. Friday, firefighters were called to a house fire in the 200 block of Mulberry Street. The house appeared fully involved when firefighters arrived. Fire Chief Gene Ayala said the kitchen sustained the worst damage, but the cause of the fire was still undetermined.

At 1 p.m. Friday, firefighters were dispatched to Cline on U.S. Highway 90 West for a grass fire started by someone with a blown tire.
