MUCH TO OFFER - A vendor displays her wares at Hunters Roundup held Friday at the Willie De Leon Civic Center. |

People arriving at the Willie De Leon Civic Center Reading Room for early voting shortly before 5 p.m. Friday seemed inclined to stay for the 2008 Hunters Roundup at Willie De Leon Civic Center auditorium. Chamber Director Wendy Speer estimated the Hunters Roundup crowd as at least 1,200.
We had 40 booths, including the Texas Parks and Wildlife Service Wall of Shame and a tank of fish displayed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said Speer. Our expo booths ranged from taxidermists to real estate agents to food booths. There were 10 community and civic organizations giving away prizes. There were also jewelry, purses and various craft items.
Speer said the chamber gave away goodie bags filled with chamber-member promotional items to the first 100 out-of-town hunters to arrive at the roundup.
Winners in the chamber's 20-gun drawing were Tori Davis, Flo Castro, Jay Leyendecker, Conley Chilek, Jay Merritt, Sammy Horton, Kelley Smith, Douglas Brice, Todd Biddick, Bob Zaiglin, Diron Holt, Ben Masters, Belinda Davenport and Domingo Garza, all of Uvalde.
Out-of-town winners were David Vogel of Millican, Jack Booth of Catarina, Randy Westmoreland of Deer Park, Dalton Moravits of Haslet, Anthony Bowles of Cleveland and Larry DeSpain of Georgia.
The winner of Country Living, a painting by Bud Breen, was Larri Wright. The Texas Guns gave away the painting in a drawing.
One striking feature of this year's Hunters Roundup was the addition of an ornamental pond between the auditorium and the Reading Room. Ted Sanford of Sanford Water Works erected the pond for Hunters Roundup and took it down afterward.
Also drawing a crowd to the courtyard was hot chili offered by Uvalde EMS and Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department, winners of the Second-Annual Hunters Roundup Chili Cook-off. Speer said last year's winner was Uvalde Police Department.
Live music was provided in the courtyard by Ambiente Band, with Smokin' Gun DJ providing recorded music inside.
Different vendor booths featured a multitude of items aimed at hunters, though booths featuring free barbecue, sausage and tamales also targeted a lot of attention.
