Castillo recalls ravages of World War II

THE FOLLOWING was written by Alex Castillo, son of Alejandro Castillo of Uvalde. It is part one of a two-part feature.
Alejandro “Role” Castillo was a combat rifleman during World War II who served with the 3rd Infantry Division, 15th Regiment and witnessed what is believed to be the highest one-day loss of American lives during the war. Castillo was drafted while working in Bakersfield, Calif. where he was staying with two cousins, Tomas and Alejandro Mireles. It was during the Great Depression and one had to go wherever one could get a job.
