Refugio ‘Rufus’ Castro
Refugio “Rufus” Castro, 56, of Uvalde died on Jan. 10, 2014, at his residence. He was born on Oct. 13, 1957, in Uvalde to Elisa Luna Castro and Jose Castro. He married Jessica Lopez in Uvalde on Dec. 24, 1999. He is survived by his wife; 15 children, Cassandra Castro of Robstown, Refugio De Los Santos, Juan Daniel Castro, Luis Refugio “Louie” Castro, David Lee Castro and Jose Francisco “Joey” Castro, all of Uvalde, Joe Anthony Flores of New Braunfels, Manuel Lopez, John Lopez and Javier Pineda, all of Colorado, Hope Martinez of Colorado, Angie Montolva of Austin, Naomi Jimenez of Eagle Pass, Candi Pineda of Austin and Sara Jackson of Colorado; four sisters, Elena Gonzales of South Bend, Ind., Rosalinda De Leon, Sylvia Trevino and Rosie Ramirez, all of Uvalde; three brothers, Roberto Castro, Juan Manuel Castro and Joe Lewis Castro, all of Uvalde; 16 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Maria Blanca Castro and Olga Herrera; and one brother, Deacon Ramon Castro. A rosary was recited on Monday and a vigil was held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel. A funeral Mass was held yesterday at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers were Refugio De Los Santos, Juan Daniel Castro, Luis Refugio “Louie” Castro, David Lee Castro, Jose Francisco “Joey” Castro and Joe Anthony Flores.
