Thomas “Sonny” Martin Preece, 84, of Leakey died on Oct. 19, 2014, in Uvalde. He was born on Sept. 2, 1930, in Leakey to Ethel McCoy Preece and Tom Preece. Preece was the oldest of five children. He married Emily Nichols in 1985. They were members of The Trinity (New) Fellowship Church. Preece was a lifelong resident of Leakey and worked for the Real County Courthouse with his friend Tom Boy Warren. He retired on Sept. 1, 1995, from the Real County Courthouse, on the same day as his youngest brother, Sam. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one brother, Coy D. Preece. He is survived by two brothers, Ellis J. Preece and Sam G. Preece of Leakey; one sister, Zelma J. Walsh of Leakey; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Memorial services are pending.
Adrian C. Vega, 21, of Uvalde died on Oct. 16, 2014, in Uvalde. Graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery with the Rev. Holt Tuck officiating. He was born on Nov. 14, 1992, in Uvalde to Georgina Coronado Vega and Juan Vega. He married Cassandra Taylor on Jan. 18, 2014, in Uvalde. He is survived by his wife, a resident of Uvalde; one daughter, Ada Taylor of Uvalde; parents, residents of Uvalde; one brother, Ricardo C. Vega of Uvalde; paternal grandparents, Refugio and Esperanza Vega of Uvalde; maternal grandparents, Arnulfo and Gloria Coronado of Crystal City; and maternal great-grandparents, Jose and Maria Coronado of Crystal City. A prayer service was held yesterday at 7 p.m. at the Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel.
John Gene Hardin, 87, of Yakima, Washington, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Cottage-in-the-Meadow Home Care and Hospice in Yakima. Hardin was born on April 30, 1927, in McAllen, Texas, but grew up in Uvalde and graduated from Uvalde High School with the class of 1944. He served with the Navy from 1944-1946 during World War II in the Pacific, then was recalled and served during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. Hardin attended Texas A&M where he graduated with a degree in agriculture, continuing that study in graduate school both at A&M and at Texas Tech University. He spent most of his working life as a real estate appraiser for the Bureau of Indian Affairs performing land valuations for the Indian tribes in Montana, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. He was a member of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, holding their highest professional designation of ARA (Accredited Rural Appraiser).
Evangelina G. Cano, 83, of Uvalde died on Oct. 13, 2014, in San Antonio. A rosary was read yesterday and will be recited again today at 7 p.m. at the Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. She was born on July 21, 1931, in Allende, Coahuila, Mexico to Alejandra Carmona Gallegos and Francisco Gallegos. She married Ramon Cano on June 25, 1978, in Crystal City. She is survived by one daughter, Gloria B. Perez and husband, Juan, of Uvalde; one son, Ricardo G. Banda and wife, Consuelo, of Uvalde; five grandchildren, Jonathan M. Perez, Debora A. Perez, Julio V. Banda, Lissette V. Banda and Jessica Cervantes; one step-grandson, Johnny L. Perez; five great-grandchildren, Destiny M. Garcia, Desirea M. Garcia, Danielle M. Garcia, Jaelynn M. Perez and Jonathan M. Perez, Jr.; special friend, Georgina Vega of Uvalde; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Robert “Bobby” Allen McEntyre, age 48, of Uvalde, TX, passed away Oct. 11, 2014. Bobby was born June 15, 1966, in San Antonio, TX, to Elaine Been and the late Billie Wayne McEntyre. Bobby was a 1984 graduate of Uvalde High School. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by his step-father, Michael Been. Survivors include his mother, Elaine Been of New Braunfels; sister and brother-in-law, Tammy and Charles Morin of Bulverde; nieces and nephews, Matthew, Waylon, Casey, Kaitlyn and Nicole; grandmother, Norma McEntyre of Lytle; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Tondre- Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville, TX. The funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Tondre- Guinn Funeral Home. Interment will follow the funeral service at the Lytle Community Cemetery in Lytle, TX. Elisa Silva, 82, of Uvalde died on Oct. 10, 2014, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. She was born on Dec. 6, 1931, in D’Hanis to San Juana Cortez Reyes and Sabino Reyes. She married Manuel Campos Silva on March 26, 1950.
David Garner Burleson Sr., 79, of Vance died on Oct. 8, 2014, in San Antonio. He was born on Dec. 23, 1934, in Wimberley to Lena Stephenson Burleson and Perry Edgar Burleson. He is survived by his sons, Jim Bob Burleson, David Garner Burleson (Flippen) Jr. and William Perry Burleson (Flippen); two grandchildren; one sister, Rachel Laverne; two brothers, Billie James Burleson and Mickey Joe Burleson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and nine siblings, Oliver Dolpho Burleson, Woody Lyn Burleson, Robert Edgar Burleson, Dorcas Lola Burleson, Teresa Aline Burleson, Mary Lou Burleson, Anna Marcelene Burleson, Martha Carol Burleson and Jerry Nell Burleson. Visitation was held Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Nelson Funeral Chapel in Camp Wood. Graveside services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Vance Cemetery in Vance with Cody Haynes officiating.
