Sybil Sue Clark, 61, ofUvalde died on April 30, 2015, at her residence. She was born on Feb. 3, 1954, in Carrizo Springs to Bonnie June (Nelson) Branch and Kenneth Branch. She married John Clark in Corpus Christi on Jan. 14, 1974.
Rosita “Yaya” J. Garcia, 81, of Uvalde died on April 26, 2015, at her residence. She was born on April 16, 1934, in Marfa to Josefa (Barragan) Aguilar and Pedro Aguilar. She married Ramon Garcia Sr. on Aug. 21, 1954, in Uvalde. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, aresident of Uvalde; one son, Sonny Garcia and wife, Jennifer, of Uvalde; one daughter, Gema I. Hernandez and husband, Moses, of Uvalde; two sisters, Ernestina Flores of Uvalde and Emma Sue Cordova of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one brother, Adalberto Aguilar of Uvalde; two grandchildren, Nathan Ray Garcia of Austin and Lauren Michelle Garcia of Uvalde; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Elisa Flores; and two brothers, Harvey Aguilar and Ismael Aguilar. A vigil service was held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel. A Mass of Christian burial was held yesterday at 10 .m.
Emma Claire Smith, formerly of San Marcos, died on April 22, 2015, in Katy. She was born on Jan. 24, 1934, in Uvalde to Beulah Barber and Penn Barber. While in Uvalde, she met and married her husband of 32 years, Hollis Wilson Smith.During the Korean Conflict, Smith and her husband were stationed in Germany. After returning from Germany, they made SanMarcos their lifelong home. According to the family, Smith was active in the successful campaign of her husband for his election to city council, school board and mayor. Smith graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a major in education. She was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. Her much loved, lifelong teaching career in the San Marcos Independent School District spanned 32 years. She taught at Travis Elementary, where she was awarded the honor of “Teacher of the Year.” After retiring she practiced real estate and later taught at the Kyle Correctional Center in Kyle.
Belia Rios Mata, 78, of Uvalde died on April 27, 2015, at her residence. A rosary was read yesterday and will be recited again today at 7 p.m. at the Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow inHillcrest Cemetery. She was born on Oct. 2, 1936, in Rowena to Francisca (Baltasar) Rios and Antonio Rios. She married Juan V. Mata in Belton on Aug. 16, 1956. She is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Gonzales and husband, Robert Jr., and Sandra Olivarez, all of Uvalde and Sonia Torres and husband, Jesus, of Clinton, Oklahoma; three sons, Juan Mata and wife, Olivia, Eddie Mata and Roberto Mata, all of Uvalde; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Rogelio Mata; two brothers; two sisters; and one granddaughter, Amanda Mata. Pallbearers will be Giovanni Edwardo Mata, Daniel Julian Mata, Raul A.
Elda M. Enriquez, 65, of La Pryor died on April 28, 2015, at her residence. A rosary will be recited today and tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Rushing- Estes-Knowles Mortuary Chapel.A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Rushing-Estes- Knowles Chapel. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. She was born on May 25, 1949, in Uvalde to Susana Garcia Enriquez and Epifanio G. Enriquez. She is survived by one sister, Edna Del Toro of Uvalde; one brother, Fred Enriquez of La Pryor; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
John Walton Raine of San Antonio, age 87, passed away on April 23, 2015. He was born on Dec. 7, 1927, in Uvalde, TX, to Edith and Randolph Raine. In 1946, after graduating from Uvalde HighSchool, Walton enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served in Guam and Saipan. After his discharge, he married Virginia Rose Monkhouse in 1949. He graduated from the University of Texas and remained an avid Longhorn fan throughout his life. After relocating in Uvalde in 1953, Walton joined his father, Randolph, at Raine’s Insurance Agency selling insurance and years later sold real estate. He was a respected businessman and a true gentleman. In 1978 he married Iva Brame of San Antonio. They moved there permanently in 1983, but Walton continued to do business in Uvalde and enjoyed his weekly visits there. Church was always an important part of Walton’s life.
