Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District officials canceled Saturday’s board meeting which was slated to review the employment of UCISD police chief Pete Arredondo and said he is now on unpaid administrative leave.

District officials announced the change Friday afternoon and said the meeting was postponed to allow for due process, as requested by Arredondo’s attorney.

“The meeting to consider the termination of Chief Arredondo will be held at a later date which has yet to be determined,” said Anne Marie Espinoza, executive director of marketing and communications for UCISD. “During this interim period, as allowed under law, Chief Arredondo shall be on unpaid administrative leave.”

Arredondo, who held a central role in the law enforcement response on May 24, has been on paid leave since June 22.

He joined the district in March of 2020, coming back to Uvalde from Laredo United Independent School District where he served as captain.

His previous experience included serving in the Uvalde Police Department, where he advanced to the rank of assistant chief of police, and the Webb County Sheriff’s office.

Arredondo replaced Leo Flores, who resigned from his position as UCISD PD chief in January 2020 after leading the campus police force for less than two years.
