Big Springs Charter School athletes play in All-Star Game


Members of the Hawks, the six-man football team from the Big Springs Charter School Brune Campus in Leakey.

Big Springs Charter School Brune Campus seniors Brian Flores and Hunter Nation and sophomores Braden Smith and Zachary Vasquez played in the Texas Association of Independent Athletic Organizations All-Star football game held Dec. 10, 2022, in Bryan.

The six-man football athletes who attend school in Leakey played for the West All-Star team, which fell to the East All-Stars who took a 52-14 lead in the final period.

Flores, playing quarterback, scored one of the West’s two touchdowns. 

Last year was the inaugural season for Big Spring Charter School’s Brune Campus football program, which is led by head coach Albert Hernandez and assistant coach Joe De La Cruz.

Hernandez said the All-Star athletes were chosen to represent the school based on their athletic achievements and skill throughout the season. 

With an overall 0-7 record for the season, the team’s most recent game took them to Austin where they participated in a game against NYOS Charter School at Austin on Nov. 11, losing 60-7; Valor South Austin at Austin, Nov. 5, 51-6; Corpus Christi Homeschool Organization of South Texas, Oct. 28, 53-13; Jubilee Brownsville, Oct. 15, 61-12; Hill County, Oct. 7, score unknown; SA Town East, Sept. 29, 49-0; Grandfalls Royalty, Sept. 23, 48-0.

School superintendent and head coach Hernandez said the team, “played hard and learned a lot for next year.”  In addition to All-Stars Brian Flores, Hunter Nation,  Braden Smith, and Zachary Vasquez, inaugural team members included Fabian Aguilar, Jonah Bustamante, Trey Bustamante, Arnufo Cano, Alex Cervantez, Lelin Dunaway, Rudy Hernandez, Cesar Martinez, Juan Mata, Justin McBryar, Josh Ortegon, Damon Pannell, Colby Ramos, Johnathan Ramos, Kendrick Torres, J.J. Vandusal, Kadrian Villarreal, and Landon Yaklin.
