Home-school freshman Baylee Grissom and her exotic heavy weight Bruiser display the grand champion banner they earned Friday at the Uvalde County Junior Livestock Show. The competition took place at the Uvalde County Arena at the Fairplex, where 12 students exhibited steers.

Bruiser, a 1,375 pound exotic heavyweight steer shown by home-school freshman Baylee Grissom, stole the show Friday as he won grand champion honors during the 82nd-annual Uvalde County Junior Livestock Show.

This marks the fourth time Baylee has shown a grand champion steer at the Uvalde show. Her previous wins were in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Her brother Kylen won reserve grand champion honors with his 1,360 pound exotic middle weight entry, Sparrow.

Last year, Kylen’s entry bested Baylee’s, and he took home grand champion honors.

This year, in the American division, Sabinal seventh-grader Tucker Allens’ lightweight entry won breed champion, while reserve champion honors went to home school sophomore Ashton Lopez for his medium weight entry.

For the British division, Uvalde Classical Academy sixth-grader Dallas Hesse won breed champion honors with her medium weight entry, while reserve champion honors went to Baylee Grissom for her medium weight entry.

This year’s steer competition was judged by Gillespie County  4-H and youth development county extension agent Taylor Osbourn.

Broilers, Goats

The grand champion broilers were shown by Knippa fifth-grader Cole Monk. UCA sophomore Fletcher Sample won reserve grand champion honors.

In the angora goat category, grand champion honors were awarded to Uvalde High School senior Cole Routh’s purebred doe kid, and reserve grand champion honors were awarded to UHS sophomore Cody Routh’s registered doe kid.

In other divisions, it was more of the Routh’s family goats that won honors, including champion honors for Cody’s registered buck kid, and reserve champion honors for Cole’s registered buck kid.

In purebred doe kid division, Knippa senior Matthew Santos received champion and reserve champion honors. For purebred pen of three doe kids, Santos also took home champion honors, while home-school junior Cora Ford won reserve champion honors.

Breeding Sheep

In the breeding sheep category, Knippa sophomore Kayleigh Griffin took home grand champion honors with her medium wool ewe lamb, while fellow Knippa sophomore Kennedy Thompson earned reserve grand champion with her medium ewe lamb.

For the Dorper breed, UHS sophomore Trevor Black’s ram lamb received breed champion honors, and Utopia seventh-grader Hallie Moore’s ram lamb won reserve division champion honors.

For Dorper ewe lambs, Utopia sophomore Yongle Li showed the reserve breed champion, while the reserve division champion title went to UHS sophomore Trevor Black.

In the fine wool division, ewe lamb class, Knippa sophomore Genesis Pilkiington’s heavy weight entry won breed champion, while reserve breed champion went to UHS sophomore Audrey Williams for her lightweight ewe lamb.

In the fine wool division ram lamb class, division champion honors were awarded to UCA eighth-grader Carly Rae Colvin’s entry, while Utopia sophomore Colton Snow showed the reserve division champion.

In the medium wool division, ram lamb class, Utopia sophomore Colton Snow showed the division champion.

For the novice division, division champion honors went to UCA third-grader Emry Ruth Hale’s entry, while Knippa fourth-grader Hannah Hughes’ entrywon the reserve division title.

For pen of three, UHS sophomore Trevor Black’s entry took home champion honors, and the reserve champion title went to Utopia High School junior Hayden Loman’s entry.

Rabbits

Grand champion honors in the rabbit show went to fryer rabbits exhibited by UCA sixth-grader London Hobbs. Knippa seventh-grader Abigail Lopez’s entry won the reserve grand champion title.

For pen of three, Knippa sixth-grader Joaquin Garcia’s entry won champion honors, while UCA sixth-grader London Hobbs showed the reserve champion fryer rabbits.

Meat Goat Does

In the doe meat goat division, UCA sixth-grader Brett Dreyer’s division three, class two entries won grand champion and reserve grand champion honors.

In division one, Morales Junior High eighth-grader Ava Schlessiger’s class two entry won division champion, while UHS sophomore Morgan Dreyer’s entry won reserve division honors.

In division two, UHS sophomore Morgan Dreyer’s class two entry won division champion. Reserve division honors were awarded to Knippa sixth-grader Joaquin Schlessiger’s class one entry.

For the novice division, Knippa seventh-grader Cameron Schustereit’s entry won the division champion title, while Knippa fourth-grader Ryanne Gallardo-Brewster’s entry won reserve division champion.

In the wether meat competition, Knippa sophomore Kennedy Thompson’s division three, class three entry won grand champion honors, while reserve grand champion honors were given to Knippa fourth-grader Ryanne Gallardo-Brewster’s division two, class one entry.

In division one, Knippa sixth-grader Joaquin Schlessiger’s class three entry won division champion honors, while Morales Junior High eighth-grader Ava Schlessiger’s class one entry won reserve division champion honors.

For division two, class two, UHS junior Morgan Dreyer’s entry won reserve division champion honors.

In division three, class two, Knippa sophomore Kennedy Thompson’s entry received the reserve division champion award.

Swine

Sabinal eighth-grader Morgan Peek’s white cross light heavy-weight swine entry won grand champion, and Grace Christian Academy senior Rylee Dodson’s hamp medium weight entry won reserve grand champion honors.

For the dark cross breed, UCA junior Anna Cate Walker’s heavy weight won breed champion, while Sabinal sixth-grader’s light heavy weight entry received the reserve breed champion award.

For the dark or other pure breed, both breed champion and reserve breed champion were from the light heavy weight division. Knippa fourth-grader Kymber Dodson’s entry received breed champion honors, and Knippa eighth-grader Thomas Reed Willis’ entry received the reserved breed champion title.

For Duroc, both breed champion and reserve breed champion were light heavy-weights. Grace Christian Academy senior Rylee Dodson’s entry earned breed champion honors, while Morales Junior High eighth-grader Hiler Haby’s entry won reserve breed champion.

For hamp, Sabinal junior Manuel Perez-Bravo showed the reserve breed champion, which was a light-weight hamp.

For white cross, Sabinal sophomore Brandon Gomez’s light heavy-weight entry won reserve breed champion honors.

For white or other pure breed, Sabinal senior Austyn Schulte’s light weight entry won the breed champion title, while Knippa eighth-grader Thomas Reed Willis’ light heavy-weight entry earned reserve breed champion honors.

For York, both breed champion and reserve breed champions were light weights. The breed champion was shown by Sabinal junior Manuel Perez-Bravo, and Morales Junior High eighth-grader Blake Robin’s entry won reserve breed champion honors.

Commercial Heifers

In the commercial heifers show, grand champion honors went to Knippa senior Makayla Schawe, and the reserve grand champion was shown by Knippa eighth-grader McKenzie Speer. The championship round is decided by totaling competitors’ interview scores and pens of three heifers placements.

For pen of three heifers, Knippa senior Makayla Schawe won champion honors, while UCA sixth-grader Dallas Hesse’s entries won the reserve champion title.

For junior interview, Knippa fifth-grader Layni Smaistrla won champion honors, and fellow Knippa eighth-grader McKenzie Speer won reserve champion. For senior interview, Knippa senior Makayla Schawe won champion honors, and UHS senior Adam Andres won reserve champion honors.

Farm Projects

The farm project senior team of UHS junior Miller Carnes and James “Tres” Colvin won grand champion honors for their recreational equipment project, while UHS team of sophomore Xavier Sanchez and senior Anthony Garcia received the reserve grand champion award for their farm equipment project.

In the division of junior individual farm projects, Utopia seventh-grader Andy McNeil won division champion honors for his furniture and decoration project, while Steubing Elementary fourth-grader Wesley Stevenson won reserve division champion for his farm equipment project.

For senior individual farm project, UHS junior Colton Gaston won division champion honors for his furniture and decoration project, while home-school sophomore Floyd McCoy Smith won reserve division champion honors for his recreational equipment project.
