Cadel-Smith Daughters of the Republic hold February meeting

The Caddel-Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas met Feb. 10 at the Texas Center, located at Schreiner University in Kerrville.

More than 25 members, prospective members and guests were in attendance to hear Donald Frazier, director of the Texas Center, give attendees a talk about the center’s future goals, highlighting Texas’ virtues of spirt, fortitude and achievement. The center showcases pristine historical maps, beautiful paintings, along with Texas memorabilia.

After Frazier’s talk, the visitors viewed a short vignettes about Texas, at the university’s student media center, one of which, “Remembering the Past, Preparing for the Future,” highlighted the magic which is Texas.

Ben Friberg, the mega-talented media specialist, is responsible for these films. Another short film was presented on the Texas Longhorn. After the visit to Schreiner University, the Daughters met in the events hall of Rails restaurant for an abbreviated DRT meeting. President Billie Nast called for officer and committee reports. Roberta Himebrook, registrar, reported that we have three applications for membership approved. Those applications included Keri Baker, Jill Foster and Kathy Phillips. The chapter also voted to accept the applications for membership from Suzette Bellows and Lacy Whitaker, both of Bandera.

First vice president Kay Anderson reminded us that the 45th anniversary celebration of our chapter is being planned. Children of the Republic of Texas sponsor, Billie Nast, reported that we have two applications for membership approved. 

Those applicants are Thomas Golden and Isaac Golden, whose certificates will be presented at the Caddel-Smith DRT meeting on March 5, at 2 p.m. at the El Progreso Memorial Library in Uvalde. Education chair, Jakelynn Crawford, reported that awards for the winners of the essay contest will also be presented at that time. 

This year’s winners are Colt Ayala, St. Philip’s, first place; Kale Adair, St. Philip’s, second place; and Charles Keith, Nueces Canyon Consolidated Independent School District, third place. 

The seventh-grade essays are still being graded. 

The chapter meeting was followed by a delicious luncheon and fellowship. Membership in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas is open to women at least 16 years of age who can prove lineal descent from men and women who rendered loyal service to Texas prior to its annexation in 1846 by the United States.
