Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Plinio Caldera will join the orthopedics team of Dr. Jack Conoley and physician assistant Ryan Teague at Uvalde Medical and Surgical Associates in August of 2023.

Uvalde Memorial Hospital said Caldera was born in Managua, Nicaragua, and moved to Houston in 1984.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a physician assistant certificate at Baylor College of Medicine. He worked as a physician assistant in orthopedic surgery in Houston for four years and went on to obtain a medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Caldera completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Scott and White Memorial Hospital, Texas A&M University in Temple. Since, he has worked in both private practice and group settings over the last 20 years around the Houston area, including with Houston Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for ten years.

Caldera is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Caldera on board. He brings years of experience in orthopedics to our already very skilled and experienced team,” said Adam Apolinar, chief executive officer of UMH and UMSA. “Adding him to the mix will enable us to provide high-quality care for even more patients quickly and efficiently.”

Caldera has three grown children and brings with him to Uvalde his wife, Claudia.

“I come from a small family and have always dreamed of serving a small, close-knit community that I can call home,” Caldera said. “I feel like Uvalde provides me the perfect setting to do just that.”

Caldera is fluent in Spanish and English. He enjoys traveling, exploring restaurants, exercising, movies, and spending time with family and friends.

He will begin seeing patients in early September and will begin accepting applications for new patients after Aug. 15.

New patient applications may be submitted to Uvalde Medical and Surgical Associates located at 1195 Garner Field Road, Building B, Suite 300. For questions or additional information on becoming a patient, contact the UMSA offices at 830-278-3086.
