CEOs meet weekly for food, fellowship

The weekly Chicks Eat Out event, hosted every Wednesday at noon at restaurants in and around Uvalde, provides an opportunity for fellowship among Uvalde women.
The event was started by Kay Brieden when she served as director of the Herby Ham Activity Center. The program has been hosted for the better part of a decade, and the group still gets together every Wednesday.
“We meet up each week and catch up with each other. Wherever we meet, there’s a lot of laughs and food,” said Sue Schwencke-Rankin, current director of the Herby Ham Activity Center.
Brieden originally created the program for single ladies in the area who didn’t want to go out to lunch alone. Since then, more women have joined.
When the group grew in numbers, its members decided on a name – Chicks Eat Out, and the refer to themselves as the CEOs.
“We go out to eat every Wednesday and then I’ll decide where to eat the next time we meet,” Schwencke-Rankin said. “I’ll ask the group where they want to eat and decide that way.”
While the group usually eats in Uvalde, sometimes the members visit restaurants in nearby communities.
Schwencke-Rankin said the group is great because of the fellowship that exists among members. She said anyone is welcome to join and members are not required to attend every Wednesday.
“On average, we have eight people attend every Wednesday. Sometimes we’ve had 15 people show up. It’s open to anyone who can attend,” she said. “There is no membership fee. All you have to do is pay for your lunch.
“Restaurants like seeing us come. Even if we only have a few people show up, that’s still a crowd,” Schwencke-Rankin said. “We just sit and have a good time and catch up with each other.”
