Chamber seeking candidates for leadership program

The Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is seeking candidates to join their 2024-2025  Leadership Uvalde class.

Classes are typically made up of a group of individuals representing various local businesses and agencies. The leadership group visits multiple chamber members during outings designed to offer an inside look at how Uvalde operates.

“This unique program is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who are passionate about contributing positively to our community and eager to expand their understanding and network,” said  Mario “MJ” Miller, chamber CEO.

City employee Juli Alvarado, a member of the 2023 class, spoke about her experience on Feb. 2 at the annual chamber awards banquet and dinner.

“Leadership Uvalde has been one of the greatest privileges I have been granted. I like to explain to people that I’m a daughter of Uvalde, I know everybody, I know everything. I’ve been on every tour. Boy was I wrong,” Alvarado said.

She said the course offered about 10 months of behind-the-scenes experiences, including riding on “whirlybird” helicopter with no doors as part of a Holt Helicopter tour, and touring the beautiful and vast 501 Ranch, where she learned she is “not that bad” at skeet shooting.

“Our group got to see what not every human being does,” Alvarado said. She also praised the friendship created with her graduating classmates, including  Sonja Ruiz, Brooke Long, Matthew Hughes, Luke Rabon and Zachary Bordovsky.

“I sincerely hope that each of you business decision makers consider nominating and sponsoring a worthy candidate from your organization. It’s a fantastic way to get involved in our community and to help nurture the future leaders of our area,”Alvarado said.

Program details

The application deadline is March 1. Those interested are encouraged by Miller to apply early, as classes are limited to 10 participants.

There is a fee of $350 per applicant. Miller said the fee covers program materials, session facilitation, and other related costs to ensure a high-quality experience for all participants.

Interested candidates must be available to meet one day a month, typically the last Thursday of the month. Lunch is provided.

Miller said the full-day sessions are designed to be immersive and comprehensive, covering a wide range of topics relevant to  community growth and development.

“This program is a unique chance to gain rare and valuable insights into the community of Uvalde, offering participants a deeper understanding and connection to our area. Whether you’re looking to enhance your leadership skills, build your network, or simply learn more about the community we call home, Leadership Uvalde offers something for everyone,” Miller said.
