Commissioners considering proposed increase in tax rate

Uvalde County Commissioners on Monday postponed approval of the 2017-2018 operating budget to review the proposed tax rate of 74.09 cents per $100 valuation, equal to the rollback rate.

Commissioner Randy Scheide made the motion, which was seconded by Commissioner Jerry Bates and carried by a 4-0 vote. The meeting to possibly approve the budget is set Monday at 6 p.m.

The current tax rate is 70.52 cents per $100 valuation. Certified property values for Uvalde County decreased by nearly $190 million from 2016 to 2017.

Representatives with the Nueces River Authority were not present to give a report on invasive species so the presentation was postponed for the second time.

Action regarding election processes was also tabled. Schiede, who requested the topic be placed on the agenda, said he was not prepared for the discussion.

Commissioners approved appointing Chuck Bevis, Devan Caballero and Bill Ed Kolinek to the El Progreso Memorial Library board of directors.

Commissioners also approved annual fees with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles for Texas Registration fees. The fees included a $10 county road and bridge fee and a $1.50 child safety fee.

Fees collected for the road and bridge fee must be credited to the county road and bridge fund, while child safety fees must be used for school crossing guard services or programs to enhance child safety, health or nutrition.
