COVID-19 claims three more Uvalde County residentsFree Access

Three more Uvalde County residents have died after being diagnosed with COVID-19, bringing the total to eight deaths in the county since June 24.

The first area death attributed to coronavirus complications was that of a 79-year-old Sabinal man who died while at home recovering from COVID-19, for which he had been hospitalized. All other deaths have been of patients age 80 or older.

Over the weekend, three nursing home patients, including two men, ages 80 and 93, and one woman, age 88, died.

Dr. Jared Reading, official with the Uvalde Health Authority, said all three individuals had multiple medical problems in addition to the coronavirus.

Though over 50 care facility residents have tested positive for COVID-19, Reading said some nursing home patients were considered recovered last week and more have recovered this week.

Four previous county deaths were also of nursing home patients.

On July 19, an 87-year-old patient at Uvalde Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center who was virus-positive and had multiple medical problems died; on July 16, an 82-year-old patient at Uvalde Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center died; an 80-year-old Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center resident died on July 13; and a Uvalde Healthcare patient in their 90s died July 9.
