COVID-19 positivity rate exceeds 30%

Soaring cases of COVID-19 have led to the closure of the Uvalde school district and a community fitness center, as well as a change to curbside for the library.

As of Monday, there had been 728 new cases of coronavirus in the county over the past five days, and the positivity rate was at about 31.8 percent. The positivity rate is the percentage of positive tests out of the total number of coronavirus tests performed.

Both the rapid test site run by Grand Avenue Pharmacy at 220. E. Main St. and the PCR test site run by Curative at the Willie De Leon Civic Center, 300 E. Main St., have been popular, with lines seen at both locations.

The case surge has left some facilities short of employees, and resulted in several closures.

Community Health Development Inc. announced Monday evening that the fitness center would be closed this week due to staffing shortages.

Both Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District and Sabinal ISD have announced temporary closures, as well.

El Progreso Memorial Library also announced Monday they would resume their curbside service this week until further notice, due to COVID-19 case surges.

“Story Hours will be presented Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. by live-streaming and all services such as photocopy, scanning, faxing, laminating and 3D printing will be accepted by telephone, mail and e-mail requests.  Books and AV materials may be requested in the same way, and all items will be delivered on an appointment basis at the library back door on Garden Street.  The book return box near the back door may be used at any time,” wrote Mendell Morgan, librarian, in a Facebook post.

Morgan said electronic access to the databases and catalog is available anytime at www.elprogreso.org.

Access to the El Progreso wifi system is available outdoors for anyone stationed close to the building in the driveway or near the porch areas. Applications for library cards for those age 6 and above are available via telephone.

To contact the library, call, 830-278-2017 or email  elprogresomemoriallibrary@yahoo.com.
