Coyotes battle Crystal City here tomorrow

Following a brief delay in games because of COVID-19 quarantine, the Uvalde Coyotes will be back in District 30-4A action here tomorrow.

The Coyotes will host the Crystal City Javelinas in Uvalde High School’s Harvey Kinchlow Gym.

Tip-off time for the varsity game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Preceding that contest will be a 5 p.m. freshman game and a 6:15 p.m. junior varsity contest.

Earlier this month at Crystal City, the Coyotes rallied from a 45-40 fourth-period scoring deficit to record a narrow 52-49 road victory over the Javelinas.

The Coyotes tied the score at 46-46 with 3:19 left in the game. They took the scoring lead on a short-range field goal by Estevan Ortiz.

But the Javelinas regained the scoring lead when Jonas Tapia sank a three-point field goal from along the baseline.

Peyton Carnes sank a pair of free throws to put the Coyotes up, 50-49, with 34 seconds left. Carnes later connected on a short-range field goal to extend the Uvalde scoring lead to 52-29.

At the buzzer, Jesse Ruiz narrowly missed on a three-point field goal that would have tied the score.

Coach Rey Flores’ Javelinas defeated the Pearsall Mavericks, 50-43, Tuesday in district competition at Pearsall.

Last Friday, the Javelinas were scheduled to play the Carrizo Springs Wildcats, but the game was postponed because of COVID-19 quarantine.

On Jan. 19, the Javelinas rallied to defeat the Hondo Owls, 57-53, in district action at Hondo.

Jesse Ruiz totaled 27 points to help lead the Crystal City comeback.

Coach Alex Oyola’s Coyotes, 2-0 in district and 9-4 for the season, will enter play tomorrow against Crystal City following a Wednesday night game at Carrizo Springs.

The game was to be a make-up contest for a district contest originally scheduled for Jan. 19. That matchup was canceled because of COVID-19 quarantine.

Last Friday, the Uvaldeans were scheduled to host the Pearsall Mavericks in a district contest in Uvalde, but Pearsall canceled the game because of COVID-19 quarantine.

The following day, the Mavericks played the Hondo Owls in a district make-up game at Hondo. Pearsall topped Hondo in a 61-59 thriller.

Hondo’s Zachary Rodriguez sank a three-point shot to cut the deficit to 60-59 with seven seconds left.

Mark Ovalle sank a free throw to extend Pearsall’s lead to 61-59.

At the buzzer, a Hondo player missed on a three-point field goal attempt.

The Coyotes will be on the road next Tuesday to take on the Hondo Owls.

Back on Jan. 15, the Coyotes beat the Hondo Owls, 60-52, in a game played in Kinchlow Gym.

Peyton Carnes and Chris Hernandez were the scoring leaders for the Coyotes with 15 points and 11 points, respectively.
