Coyotes complete 7-on-7 season

The Uvalde High School teams recently wrapped up 7-on-7 summer football competition last week.

“Our guys did a great job of competing,” said UHS head football coach R.T. Gonzales.

“It’s been a busy time for our kids as they have competed in 7-on-7 football and in other summer athletic programs,” said Gonzales. “We were fortunate to get a big number of our skill players out to compete in 7-on-7.

“These players gained valuable repetitions and stayed healthy during the process,” said Gonzales. “That’s all that matters to us during summer competition. Things will pick up when it really counts when football practice begins in about seven weeks.”

Uvalde had two 7-on-7 football teams vying in the summer competition, a Maroon team that featured varsity personnel, and a White team that featured some young players.

With the completion of the summer 7-on-7 action, all that is left for UHS football athletes is participation in the strength and conditioning program that runs through much of next month.

Uvalde High School varsity and junior varsity football players will commence practice sessions for the 2019 season on Aug. 12.

There will be a meeting for the players and parents of UHS football players in John H. Harrell Auditorium on Aug. 1.

Because UHS participated in spring football workouts last month, UHS will have only one scrimmage opponent prior to the start of the 2019 regular season.

UHS will host the Hondo Owls in scrimmage action set for Aug. 22 in the Honey Bowl.

The Coyotes will kick off their 2019 varsity regular-season football schedule on Thursday, Aug. 29, when they take on the Class 6A Eagle Pass Eagles at Cozel Foster Veterans Memorial Stadium in Eagle Pass.

That game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The season opener will mark the first of two Thursday night games for the Coyotes in 2019.

Uvalde will face the Boerne Champion Chargers in a Thursday night District 14-5A Division II contest on Oct. 24 at Boerne.

That football game will be televised by a San Antonio television station as part of their Thursday Night Lights program.

On Sept. 6, the Coyotes will make their season home debut when they host the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks in the Honey Bowl.

Kick-off time for that game is set for 7:30 p.m.

Other home games for the Coyotes in 2019 will include: Southwest, Sept. 13; Alamo Heights, Sept. 27; Medina Valley, Oct. 18; and Kennedy, Nov. 1.

Other road games for the Coyotes include: Memorial, Sept. 20; Kerrille Tivy, Oct. 11; and Lockhart, Nov. 8.
