Isaiah Rodriguez (No. 40) cuts his way between a couple of Crystal City defenders and puts up a short-range field goal attempt. His shot at the basket came during the second period of a district ball game between the Uvalde Coyotes and the Javelinas.

Two games remain on the regular-season basketball schedule for the Uvalde Coyotes.

Tuesday, the Coyotes will be on the road to face the Carrizo Springs Wildcats, while they will be home on Friday to take on the Pearsall Mavericks.

Tip-off time for both games is set for 7:45 p.m.

Coach Alex Oyola’s Coyotes, 2-3 in district and 8-17 for the season overall, were to host the Hondo Owls in district basketball last Friday night.

Because of weather, the games were rescheduled for yesterday.

Results from that game will be reported in next Thursday’s edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

The Coyotes and Hondo entered the game Saturday locked in a three-way tie with Pearsall for second place in the District 30-4A basketball standings.

They all trailed the Crystal City Javelinas by three games in the district standings with three games left to play.

Pearsall was scheduled to host Carrizo Springs Friday night, while Crystal City had a district open date.

Last Tuesday night, the Coyotes lost a 76-71 verdict against the Crystal City Javelinas at Crystal City, while Pearsall lost an 87-83 over-time road thriller against Hondo. The Owls led Pearsall by as many as 19 points, but the Mavs rallied in the fourth period to end the game to overtime.

With the win, the Owls avenged an earlier season 77-64 loss to the Mavericks and pulled into a tie for second place.

Tuesday, Hondo will host Crystal City in a key district matchup.

The Javelinas can clinch the district title with a win over the Owls.

Last month in UHS’s Harvey Kinchlow Gym, the Coyotes rallied to capture a 49-45 victory over Carrizo Springs.

Down 30-20 at halftime, the Coyotes outscored the Wildcats, 14-7, in the third period to trim the Carrizo lead to 37-34.

The Uvaldeans then outpointed the Wildcats, 15-8, in the final period to claim their come-from-behind victory.

Daniel Perez and Joseph Flores were scoring leaders for the Coyotes with 14 points and 10 points.

Others scoring were Brian Reading with seven points, Leo Flores with six points, Gabriel Larralde with four points, Jarrett Hernandez and Isaiah Rodriguez each with three points, and Jacob Dominguez with two points.

RJ Hernandez scored 20 points to lead the scoring for Carrizo Springs.

In the first district meeting of the season between the Coyotes and Pearsall, the Uvaldeans edged the Mavericks in a 68-65 road thriller.

Trailing by a half-time score of 33-27, the Coyotes battled back to outscored the Mavericks, 41-32, in the second half to win the basketball game.

Joseph Flores scored 35 points to lead all individual scorers in the ball game.

The others scorers for Uvalde were Brian Reading with 16 points, Daniel Perez with eight points, Gabriel Larralde with four points, Leo Flores with three points, and Isaiah Rodriguez with two points.

Five players scored in double figures for Pearsall, including Marco Camacho with 15 points, Julian Baez, David Rendon, and Xavier Rendon each with 13 points, and Nicholas Martinez with 10 points.
