Coyotes face Devine in season home opener

The Uvalde Coyotes will make their football season home debut tomorrow, when they face the Devine Warhorses in the Honey Bowl. Kick-off time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Our kids are really excited to play their first home game of the season,” said Uvalde High School head football coach R.T. Gonzales.

The Honey Bowl is a great place and the atmosphere is always something special,” Gonzales said. “With COVID-19, there will be fewer fans allowed in the stadium Friday, but I am sure that the crowd there will make up for the lack of numbers with their enthusiasm and support for the Coyotes.”

Coach Paul Gomez’s Warhorses will be playing on the road for the first time tomorrow.

The Warhorses lost their season home opener last Friday as they dropped a 36-7 decision to the defending state Class 2A Division I champion Refugio Bobcats.

Down 7-0, the Warhorses tied the score late in the first period when quarterback Brady Hackebeil ran 52 yards for a touchdown.

But Refugio scored three times in the second period and added a touchdown in the third period.

Devine lost their season opener last week, but they went up against a really good Refugio team. And the Warhorses were missing several players because of injuries,” Gonzales said.

Running back Justin Contreras, a pre-season district offensive most valuable player pick, did not play last Friday.

Most of the offensive yardage for Devine against Refugio came from Brady Hackebeil and running back Buddy Santos, who combined for 160 yards rushing.

Devine plays physical, power football,” said Coach Gonzales. “Their backs all block well and run hard. And they have a huge offensive line.”

The Bobcats are led up front by tackle John Schnautz, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound senior, who also plays at defensive tackle.

Schnautz anchors their line,” Gonzales said.

Schnautz and three other Devine seniors, tackle Aaron Rivera, end Christian Gerlach, and linebacker Buddy Santos are among the top defensive players.

Devine plays as physical on defense as they do on offense. They get after you,” Gonzales said.

Overall, Devine has a talented, well-coached ball club,” Gonzales said. “We anticipate a tough game Friday night.”

The Coyotes will go into action tomorrow night following a 52-14 road victory over the Carrizo Springs Wildcats last Friday.

The Coyotes rolled up 23 first downs and 504 total yards on offense, while they allowed 13 first downs and 291 yards on defense.

Overall, it was a good first-game performance,” Gonzales said. “We went into the start of the season with a lot of inexperienced players on defense and we were missing some starters on offense because of injuries. But our younger kids came though for us and gained some valuable experience.

This week, we have been working in practice to try to correct some of the mistakes we made against Carrizo Springs last Friday,” Gonzales said. “We turned the ball over, dropped some passes, and missed making some tackles. Our play needs to be more disciplined. We need to play much better fundamental football.
