Coyotes host Pleasanton in home-season finale

The Uvalde High School Coyotes will celebrate homecoming and their final home game of the season tomorrow in the Honey Bowl, where they will host the Pleasanton Eagles.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Coach Stephen Liska’s Eagles, 0-1 in District 14-4A Division I play and 5-2 for the season, will be looking to bounce back from a 39-31 overtime loss they suffered against the Boerne Greyhounds two weeks ago.

“The Eagles played a very good game against Boerne and came close to beating them,” said Uvalde High School head football coach Wade Miller.

The Eagles held a 31-21 lead going into the final period of that contest, but the Hounds rallied to score 10 points to tie the score.

In their part of the over-time period, the Hounds scored a touchdown and the two-point conversion.

Boerne held the Eagles on a fourth-down play at the one-yard line in Pleasanton’s part of the overtime to win the game.

Though they lost the game, the Eagles put up some impressive individual offensive stats.

Quarterback Sean Ramos, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior, completed 12 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns.

Running back Joel Arevalo, a 6-foot, 205-pound senior, carried the ball 32 times for 151 yards and one touchdown.

Wide receiver Jayden Palacios, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound sophomore, caught four passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

Other offensive leaders included Diego Luna, Juan Lopez, and Isaac Henrichson.

For the Eagles, the loss was only their second of the season.

Back in September, the Eagles lost a narrow 19-17 verdict to the San Antonio Antonian Apaches.

Pleasanton has racked up wins over San Antonio Edison, 42-23; Jourdanton, 42-26; Devine, 35-12; Pearsall, 52-0; and Kingsville, 49-14.

“Coach Liska and his staff have done a great job with the Eagles this season,” Miller said.

“With a few breaks in their two losses, the Eagles could easily have a 7-0 record. “Pleasanton has a big and physical ball club,” Miller said.

“They are talented and well-coached. We expect a tough game Friday night.”

Coach Miller’s Coyotes, 0-2 in district and 2-6 for the season, will enter play tomorrow trying to bounce back from a 54-17 road loss to the district-leading Boerne Greyhounds last Thursday night.

The two touchdowns for the Coyotes came on a 19-yard pass from Brodie Carnes to Martyn Malic and a 78-yard pass from Carnes to Jarrett Hernandez.  Malic kicked a 37-yard field goal while Miller Carnes completed two point-after-touchdown kicks. Linebacker Isaias Cordova intercepted a Boerne pass to set up the first Uvalde touchdown.

“Our kids gave a good effort, especially early in the contest,” Miller said.

“But in the end, we lost to a really good Boerne football team.”

One week from tomorrow, the Coyotes will play their final game of the season when they travel to Somerset to play the Somerset Bulldogs.
