Wide receiver Joey Martinez sprints down the Crystal City sideline and into the end zone for a touchdown. His catch and run for six points came during the game-like portion of the scrimmage between the Uvalde Coyotes and the Crystal City Javelinas last week. Martinez and his teammates will kick off their regular season tomorrow as they host the Carrizo Springs Wildcats in the Honey Bowl.

Football season for the Uvalde Coyotes begins tomorrow night in the Honey Bowl when they host the Carrizo Springs Wildcats.

Kick-off time is set for 7:30 p.m. The gates at the stadium will open at 6 p.m.

Pre-sale tickets for the game are available at the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District  Central office.

“We are excited to get this season started,” said new Uvalde High School head football coach Wade Miller. “It seems like a long time in coming, but the start of the season is finally here.”

Last Friday, the Coyotes wrapped up their pre-season workouts with a scrimmage against the Crystal City Javelinas.

The Coyotes outscored the Javelinas, one touchdown to none in the controlled portion of the scrimmage and 7-0 during the game-like portion of the scrimmage.

“I was pleased by the progression of play we made from our first scrimmage against Eagle Pass to our scrimmage against Crystal City,” Miller said. “We made some mistakes, but overall we played a lot better.”

Like the Coyotes, the Carrizo Springs Wildcats have a new head coach as Giovanni Gonzalez replaces Joaquin Escobar.

Gonzalez inherits a team that returns a lot of players from last year’s 4-7 ball club that lost a 38-28 bi-district decision to the Rockport-Fulton Pirates.

“Carrizo Springs has a good ball club. They lost to a really good Rockport-Fulton team last season and have most of those kids returning,” Miller said.

“I had a chance to see them in their first scrimmage. I was impressed by their speed and their physical play. “We anticipate a tough ball game on Friday night,” Miller said.

Probable offensive starters tomorrow will include Brodie Carnes at quarterback, Julyus Martinez at tailback, Eli Barboza at fullback, Parker Haby at tight end, Jarrett Hernandez at wide receiver, Isaias Cordova at split end, Armando Luna at left tackle, Rylan Diaz at left guard, Feivel Sanchez at center, Manu Flores at right guard, and Brian Troupe at right tackle.

Defensive probables will include Roman Hernandez III at nose guard, Josh Camacho and Aaron Graves at the defensive tackle spots, Justyn Rendon and Eli Barbosa at the inside linebacker positions, Daniel Chapa and Isaias Cordova at outside linebacker posts, Joey Martinez and Jarrett Hernandez at the cornerback spots, Tony Hernandez at free safety, and Elijah Carroll at strong safety.

Parker Haby will serve as the deep snapper, Martyn Malic will do the punting, while Malic and Miller Carnes will do the place kicking.

Others available for action Friday will include Jayden Gonzalez, Gerardo Martinez, Paul Hernandez, Jonathan Jiminez, Dylan Rodriguez, Juvenal Esparza, Taylor Garcia, Frank Salazar, Jeyden Gonzales, Devon Franklin, Jose Rodriguez, Joshua Rodriguez, Robert Villarreal, Bryan Lee, Isaiah Castillo, Cayden Smith, Raul Lozano, Visente Mejia, Nathan Barboza, Dylan Sieckenius, Augustine Aviles, Jessie Rios, and Ben Vara.
