The Uvalde Coyotes will play their final home basketball game of the season Tuesday night when they host the Floresville Tigers.
Tip-off time for the District 28-5A varsity game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Harvey Kinchlow Gym.
Preceding the varsity game will be a junior varsity game at 5 p.m., while the freshman teams will do battle beginning at 5 p.m. in Oscar Cruz Gym.
In the first district varsity matchup between Uvalde and Floresville, the Tigers posted a 74-50 victory over the Coyotes in action at Floresville.
The Tigers got off to a big start against the Coyotes as they racked up 29 points in the first period.
Down 29-12, the Coyotes pretty much matched the Tigers point for point the rest of the way, but the Uvaldeans were unable to overcome that 17-point, first-period scoring deficit.
Senior Carlos Hernandez, a 5-foot-9 guard, and junior Dominic Davila, 6-foot-5, 270-pound post, combined efforts to score 63 percent of Floresville’s 74 points.
Hernandez recorded 26 points, while Davila posted 21 points.
Walker Hopkins, a 6-foot senior guard, also scored in double figures for the Tigers. He had 14 points.
Estevan Ortiz and Peyton Carnes led the scoring for the Coyotes with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
Others scoring for Uvalde were Majik De La Garza with seven points, Donovan Davila with six points, Eric Flores and Chris Hernandez each with four points, Jackson Taylor with three points, Grant Taylor with two points and D’Andre Carroll with one point.
Coach Damon Liverett’s Tigers will enter action Tuesday following a Friday night matchup against the Southside Cardinals at Floresville.
Results from the Floresville-Southside game were not available at presstime.
The Tigers entered action Friday riding a two-game winning streak, following back-to-back district victories over the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks, 74-60, and the Somerset Bulldogs, 62-49.
Coach Alex Oyola’s Coyotes were scheduled to play the Somerset Bulldogs in district action at Somerset Friday.
Results from the Uvalde-Somerset game will be reported in Thursday’s edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.
The Coyotes entered play against Somerset following a 59-49 loss against the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks last Tuesday night in Kinchlow Gym.
Trailing by as many as 20 points, the Uvalde Coyotes battled back to pull to within nine points of the Mavericks midway through the final period, but the Mavericks held off the Coyotes and wound up with a 10-point victory.
Individual scorers for the Coyotes included Donovan Davila with nine points, Chris Hernandez with seven points; Majik De La Garza, Peyton Carnes, and Grant Taylor each with six points; Christian Rivera with four points; and Jackson Taylor and Tito Gonzalez both with two points.
Winn seniors Jairo Maldonado and Moe Gaytan each scored 18 points to lead Winn.
Prior to their loss to Winn, the Coyotes lost to the Harlan Hawks, 85-38, at San Antonio.
Elijah Lomas was one of three Harlan players to score in double figures. He posted 22 points.
Estevan Ortiz and Chris Hernandez each scored nine points to top the scoring for the Coyotes.
Others scoring were Grant Taylor with eight points, Donovan Davila and Jackson Taylor each with four points, and Peyton Carnes and Majik De La Garza each with two points.
Following action Tuesday, the Coyotes will play their final game of the season on Friday when they face the Southside Cardinals in action at Southside.
