Coyotes play today in Poteet

Today at noon, the Uvalde Coyotes will begin play in the Poteet basketball tournament.

They will face the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks in Poteet High School’s main gymnasium. For the Coach Ramon Buruato’s Coyotes, the game today will be their second game against Winn in three days.

Tuesday night at Eagle Pass, the Coyotes dropped a 66-48 decision against the Winn Mavericks.

“We beat ourselves in the game. We turned ball over, made sloppy passes, and just did play well, especially in the second half,’ said Coach Buruato. “Thankfully, we get to see them again in the first game of the tournament. We hope to turn things around in this game.

“Playing back-to-back games against any team is a challenge,” said Buruato. “When I first saw the tourney bracket, I wanted to get switched to a different pool, but they had a late cancellation by another school. That made it difficult to make any other schedule changes. Poteet put their junior varsity team in the tourney to fill the spot vacated by another school.”

At 6 p.m, today, the Coyotes will take on the Cotulla Cowboys in tournament action in the PHS’s auxiliary gym.

On Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the auxiliary gym, the Uvaldeans will complete pool play with a contest against the Poteet Aggies junior varsity team.

Later tomorrow, the second round of the tourney will begin.

Teams will be seeded for second-round games based on their finish in pool play games from today and early tomorrow.

Saturday, the boys consolation game and championship game both will tip off at noon.

Other teams entered in the Poteet classic include Orange Grove, Bandera, Dilley, Young Men’s Leadership Academy, IDEA Harvey E. Najim, Charlotte, St. Anthony, and Pettus. Following tourney action this weekend, the Coyotes will be back on the road next Tuesday to battle the Del Rio Rams.

Next home competition for the Coyotes will not be until Dec. 13 when they will host the Crystal City Javelinas.

Prior to the Crystal City game, the Uvaldeans will participate in the Gregory-Portland tournament set for Dec. 8-10.

The Coyotes will tip off their District 29-4A hoops campaign on the road against the Pearsall Mavericks on Dec. 30.

Prior to Thanksgiving Day weekend holiday break, the Uvaldeans lost a 41-32 decision against the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies in a hard-fought contest played in Harvey Kinchlow Gym.

Joseph Flores led the individual scoring for the Coyotes with 18 points.
