Coyotes trounce Harlan Hawks 11-5


The Uvalde Coyotes scored six runs in the first inning and they went on to record an 11-5 baseball victory over the San Antonio Harlan Hawks last Thursday.

Playing before a large Uvalde High School spring break crowd at Marvin Kolinek Field, the Coyotes gave their fans a lot to cheer about early on as they sent 11 batters to the plate in their big six-run first inning.

Andrew Maldonado drew a walk and Chris Hernandez beat out an infield single, before Matthew Sandoval ripped a triple to deep right field.

Estevan Ortiz singled to score Sandoval.

Diego Rodriguez drew a walk.

Jackson Ruhmann singled to left center field to drive in Ortiz and Rodriguez.

David Torres was hit by a pitch.

Ruhmann and Torres advanced on base on a wild pitch by Harlan starting pitcher Johnny Rivera.

Later in the inning, Ruhmann scored on a ground out by Chris Rivera.

Andrew Maldonado drew a walk, before Harlan head coach Jason Fox brought in Doug Blevins to pitch in relief of his starting pitcher.

Blevins got the next Uvalde batter to fly out for the third out of the inning.

Up 6-1, the Coyotes added one run in the second inning.

Estevan singled and scored later in the inning on a double by Diego Rodriguez.

Chris Hernandez hit a two-run single in the third inning to extend Uvalde’s scoring lead to 9-1.

Harlan rallied to score one run in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth inning.

But the Coyotes scored a pair of runs in their part of the fifth inning.

Diego Rodriguez belted a run-scoring single.

Jackson Ruhmann drew a walk.

With two outs and Uvalde base runners at third base and first base, Ruhmann got into an intentional run down between first and second base.

Before Harlan players could tag out Ruhmann, Rodriguez scored from third base.

Down 11-3, Harlan tried to make a seventh-inning comeback.

The Hawks scored two runs before the Uvaldeans could record three outs, but it wasn’t enough as the Coyotes chalked up their third District 28-5A win.

Coach Sart Perez’s Coyotes now are 3-1 in district and 9-4 for the season.

Diego Rodriguez doubled twice and drove in two runs to lead Uvalde’s nine-hit offensive attack.

Chris Hernandez singled twice and drove in two runs; Matthew Sandoval tripled and drove in two runs; Jackson Ruhmann singled and drove in two runs; while Estevan Ortiz singled twice and drove in one run.

Shane Medrano singled in the sixth inning.

Sart Perez, the winning pitcher, scattered seven Harlan hits.

He walked only one batter, while he struck out seven batters.
