Coyotes wrap up regular season schedule

This week, the Uvalde Coyotes will wrap up their 2021 baseball regular season with two District 30-4A home games.

Tuesday, the Coyotes will host the Pearsall Mavericks, while they will host the Crystal City Javelinas Friday.

The varsity games are set to begin at 7 p.m. at Marvin Kolinek Field and they will be preceded by 4:30 p.m. junior varsity ball games.

Coach Sart Perez III’s Coyotes, 3-1 in district play and 16-7 for the season overall, enter their final week of the season in first place in the District 30-4A baseball standings.

They hold a one-game lead over both the Mavericks and the Javelinas, who are tied for second place with identical 2-2 district records.

In the first district meeting, the Coyotes shut out the Mavericks, 4-0, in a game played at Pearsall, while the Coyotes lost a 2-1 decision against the Javelinas in competition at Crystal City.

Chris Hernandez doubled, while Christian Rivera, Estevan Ortiz, Damian Rivera, Rudy Cantu, and Julian Aviles each singled.

In the Crystal City game, the Javelinas came up with only two hits off pitcher Chris Hernandez, but they took advantage of a Uvalde error to plate a pair of runs.

Hernandez notched nine strikeouts in the game.

Marco Moncada, the winning pitcher, scattered five Uvalde hits. He walked two batters and struck out three batters.

Sart Perez IV doubled, while Christian Rivera, Jose Vasquez, Damian Rivera, and Julian Aviles each singled.

The Coyotes will enter play against Pearsall Tuesday coming off Friday night action against the District 30-6A-leading Eagle Pass Eagles.

Results from that game will be reported in Thursday’s edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

The Coyotes went into the Eagle Pass game Friday night riding a two-game winning streak with back-to-back wins over Carrizo Springs, 14-4, and San Antonio Cole, 12-2.
