Cross-country team fares well in UHS meet


Uvalde High School runners performed well in the UHS Invitational cross-country running meet held Sept. 19.

Tito Gonzalez turned in the first time among the individual runners vying in the Boys’ Smaller School, Class 4A and under, Division of the meet.

His time of 16 minutes and 48.8 seconds earned him first place.

Gonzalez’s time was not only his personal-best for the course, but it was the overall record time for the course.

“I was proud of our overall performance in the meet,” said UHS head cross-country coach Libby Guzman. “Tito posted a personal record for the course and for the season. As a team, our girls ran well, and we were missing a couple of girls.”

Fiona White was the first Uvaldean to cross the finish line in the Girls’ Smaller School Division of the meet.

White finished 10th overall with her time of 13:39.10.

Three of UHS runners placed among the top 20 finishers, including: Ariana Reyes, 13th place, 13:48.90; Brisa Rodriguez, 19th place, 14:19.90; and Monica Vera, 20th place, 14:36.40.

Alex Nolasco finished 24th overall with her time of 14:47.80, while Briana Crow took 31st place with her time of 15:28.50.

Esmy Garcia and Michelle Hernandez did not participate in the meet.

The Lobos placed fourth in the team standings of the meet with 78 points.

As a team, the Coyotes finished in fourth place in the boys’ team standing with 80 points.

Others placing for the Coyotes in the meet last Saturday included Joseph Pedraza, 13th place, 18:51.80; Joaquin Terrazas, 21st place, 20:23.20; Evan Encinia, 26th place, 21:06,60; and Taylor Massey, 27th place, 21:10.80.
