Dalton principal leaves three months into school year

Mandy Pruitt

Dalton Elementary Principal Mandy Pruitt has resigned and curriculum and instruction specialist Margaret Tarski-Rodríguez will serve as an interim campus administrator.

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District announced the change Monday, Nov. 28, the first day after a week-long break for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Pruitt said she was unable to comment on the matter.

“We have a great team of administrators at Dalton, and I am confident they will continue to provide the excellent level of service to which our students, staff and parents are accustomed,” UCISD interim superintendent Gary Patterson said in a note UCISD executive director of marketing and communications Anne Marie Espinoza released this week.

Andrea Sagemuehl is serving as campus administrator and Vanessa Turner is assistant principal.

Pruitt joined the district in 2019 as an assistant campus administrator and was named principal of Dalton Elementary in June of 2020. She holds a state board of education certification as principal, special education classroom teacher, and elementary teacher.

The UCISD board of trustees renewed her contract on Monday, March 28, 2022.

In the aftermath of the Robb Elementary shooting which claimed the lives of 19 fourth-graders and two teachers, the district restructured its school campuses.

The Dalton campus welcomed approximately 200 second-graders for the 2022-23 school year in addition to its established pre-K, kindergarten, and first-grade levels.

Pruitt held multiple volunteer workdays for her campus, recruiting parents and community members to paint portable buildings and complete landscape projects on school grounds. Those projects included the building of a balance beam, installing edging, and planting.

In early November, Pruitt coordinated a donation from Lowes, whose staff brought picnic tables and a stepping stone in memory of the 19 students and two teachers who died on May 24.

In 2019, Pruitt in her role as vice principal, launched a food and clothing pantry at Dalton for students in need.

For the 2021-22 school year accountability rating issued by the Texas Education Agency, Dalton Elementary, with a total enrollment of 493 students, received a “B” rating.
