Devil’s Sinkhole hosting free public hike on Jan. 1

Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area will join many other state parks across America in hosting a First Day hike.

Those interested in the free hike event at Devil’s Sinkhole should meet at the Rocksprings Visitors Center on the Rocksprings town square at 10 a.m. on Jan. 1.

According to event organizers, the hike is not especially strenuous, a mostly level walk of under two hours time. The trail is not paved and is rocky. Volunteers recommend participants wear sturdy shoes.

The hike will conclude at the Devil’s Sinkhole National Natural Landmark, Texas’s largest one-chamber cave and also Texas’s fifth-deepest cave.

In the warmer months, the sinkhole is home to the fourth biggest bat colony in the state.
