Doris A. Morriss

Doris Ann Brown Morriss, 89, of Sonora died on March 5, 2019, in San Angelo. She was born on Aug. 13, 1929, in Rocksprings to Elsie (Adams) and Steve Brown.

She attended school in the Rocksprings school district. One year she had to move to San Angelo due to gas rationing during World War II. She strongly desired to return and finish school in Rocksprings, so she left the ranch and boarded at a room in town, and graduated from Rocksprings High School. She then obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in home economics from Southwestern University in Georgetown. She would tell stories of hitchhiking to and from school on holidays.

After seven years of dating, she married Tommy Morriss on June 10, 1950, at the Rocksprings Methodist Church. They were married for 58 years, until his death.

The couple made homes in the Davis Mountains of Balmorhea, in Uvalde and lastly on the family ranch in Sonora.

Everywhere she resided her first priority was locating a church so her family could worship and serve Christ. The family says being a wife and providing a loving and Christian home for their family was her passion in life. She was an excellent cook and hostess who welcomed all into her home; at her table there was always room for one more.

The family says Morriss was a gracious, pleasant, strong and busy woman. She was involved in many organizations within her church and  community. She served as president of the Chamber of Commerce of Uvalde, fund organizer for the Janie Briscoe Grand Opera House in Uvalde, and on the women’s auxiliary for the Hudspeth Memorial Hospital in Sonora. She was a member of various sewing clubs, and was well known for her Bridge skills.

Morriss was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers; and one sister.

She is survived by two daughters, Mindy Hurt and husband, Richard, of Dilley, and Ann Morriss; and one son, Steve Morriss and wife, Lee Ann, all of Sonora; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A service was held yesterday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Sonora. Interment followed at 2 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Mountain Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Sonora, 201 N. Water Ave., Sonora, TX 76950, or a charity of one’s choice.
