Flores Elementary fifth-graders in Vanessa Enriquez’s class display more than 100 cans of pet food along with bagged food donations that the students collected as part of a “100 Cans of Kindness Challenge.” The event celebrated the completion of the first 100 days of school on Feb. 10.

Students at Flores Elementary recently collected 445 cans of pet food as part of a “100 Cans of Kindness” challenge that was initially launched at Dalton Early Childhood Center.

The pledge, which benefitted animal rescue groups Flights to Furever and the Humane Society of Uvalde, was part of a celebration recognizing the completion of 100 days of school on Feb. 10.

Anne Marie Espinoza, executive director of marketing and communications for Uvalde Consolidated Independent School, said students were challenged over two weeks to collect 100 cans per homeroom, and the 100th day of school was the deadline.

Vanessa Enriquez’s fifth-graders collected the most food, with a total of 117 cans.

“We love getting students involved in our mission and the community support,” read the Humane Society of Uvalde Facebook page after they received the donation.

Jessica Tijerina, school counselor at Flores, organized the pet food collection for the campus.

Flights to Furever is a local non-profit animal rescue program which has rescued and re-homed more than 2,500 abandoned dogs and cats.

They work in partnership with the Humane Society of Uvalde, also a locally-funded organization that works to improve lives of unwanted animals.
