Former mayor Cody L. Smith has announced his candidacy for mayor of Uvalde in the November special election.

Smith, presently a senior vice president at First State Bank of Uvalde, has been involved with investments and banking for over 35 years.

Born and raised in Uvalde, Smith attended Texas A&M University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics.

After graduation, he returned to Uvalde and was employed as a loan officer at First Savings and Loan. In 1993, Smith joined the investment firm of Edward Jones, where he served as a limited partner and financial advisor until joining FSB in 2014. Prior to Edwards Jones, he was a branch manager at Bluebonnet Savings.

Active in civic organizations, Smith served 17 years on the Uvalde City Council, including 13 as a councilman and four as mayor. He was first elected as a councilman in 1994 and was elected mayor in 2008 and again in 2010.

During Smith’s time as mayor, council sent the issue of single-member districts to the public for a vote, which paved the way for the current council structure. Previously, council members were elected at large, while now council members must reside in the area they are elected to represent. This was considered a win for areas that felt underrepresented on a city-government level.

“I was born and raised in Uvalde and have served this community in the past,” Smith said, referencing his time as mayor, mayor pro-tem and a city council member. “I want to see Uvalde continue to grow and prosper.”

He is currently a board member of Workforce Solutions Middle Rio Grande and an advisory committee member of the Uvalde Forever Fund, created and funded in the aftermath of the May 24, 2022, mass shooting at Robb Elementary School to manage and distribute community grants.

Smith is a former board member of the Middle Rio Grande Development Council Regional Review Committee, a position to which he was appointed by Gov. George W. Bush and reappointed by Gov. Rick Perry.

He is a former board member of the Uvalde Convention and Visitors Bureau, past director of the Uvalde Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Uvalde Kiwanis Club, and a past board member of St. Henry De Osso Family Project.

He is the proud father of a son, Caden Smith, who is a senior at Uvalde High School. This fall, Caden will wear the number 21 jersey for the UHS football team. In 2022, UHS athletic director Wade Miller said, moving forward, the #21 jersey would be worn by student-athletes who exhibit strong character, strength, and loyalty. The number was chosen to honor the 19 children and two teachers who died at Robb.
