Free Sahawe summer shows set for July

The Sahawe Dancers’ 62nd-annual summer shows, which will celebrate 72 years of group activities, will be provided free of charge this year.

The summer ceremonials are usually a fundraiser for the group, dubbed Uvalde’s Goodwill Ambassadors, and proceeds help fund trips to other events and historical sites.

This year, the youth members are waiving admission costs in honor of the victims and survivors of the May 24 tragedy at Robb Elementary School as well as longtime supporter Jeanette Walther, who died on Jan. 19.

The shows will kick off July 8 and continue July 9, as well as every Friday and Saturday through July 30.

Performances, all set at 7:30 p.m., are held at the Sahawe Outdoor Theatre, located at the corner of South Wood and East Garden streets, across from H-E-B.

Performers spend an average of 1,000 hours a year to practice the dances that reflect the varied cultures of the indigenous people of North America.

“Performances are sure to be exciting and educational for everyone in attendance,” said leader Ramon Castro.
