Freshmen defeat Somerset, 22-20

It was a freshman football thriller in the Honey Bowl Thursday night.

The Uvalde Coyotes scored a fourth-quarter touchdown and then made a two-point conversion play to post a 22-20 victory over the Somerset Bulldogs.

Wide receiver Quinton Gant caught 45-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Julyus Martinez.

Gant caught the ball at the 10-yard line.

A Somerset defender grabbed Gant from behind, but Gant pulled the defender along with him across the goal line and into the end zone.

With the score tied at 20-20, the Coyotes took a timeout.

They then lined up for the two-point conversion attempt.

Julyus Martinez took the snap, followed the blocking of three of his teammates and carried the ball across the goal line for the two-point conversion.

Down 22-20 with 2:43 left in the ball game, the Bulldogs began with the ball at their 19-yard line following the ensuing kickoff.

The Coyotes stopped the Bulldogs on three plays.

Facing a fourth-down-and-15 situation with just over a minute left on the game clock, the Bulldogs went to the air, but their pass went incomplete.

The Coyotes used up the remaining time on the game clock, before celebrating a hard-fought victory. Somerset got on the scoreboard first.

They scored on a 74-yard touchdown pass.

Later in the first period, the Coyotes tied the score at 6-6 on a 61-yard run by Julyus Martinez.

Defensive back Christopher Mata intercepted a pass to stop a Somerset drive.

Starting at the Uvalde 12-yard line, the Coyotes put together an eight-play, 88-yard drive.

They topped-off the drive with a 23-yard touchdown run by Julyus Martinez, who later scored on the two-point conversion run.

Somerset rallied to tie the score at 14-14 on a 37-yard touchdown run later in the second period.

In the third period, the Bulldogs took the scoring lead on an 11-touchdown yard run, but their conversion pass failed.

Somerset covered a Uvalde fumble at their 45-yard line with six minutes left in the fourth period.They drove the ball to the Uvalde 28 where they lost the ball on downs.

Aided by a pair of personal foul penalties, the Coyotes advanced the ball to near midfield.

Two plays later, they scored the game-tying touchdown and then scored on the game-winning conversion run.
