Fundraiser lunch set for Montell school

This gift basket is up for grabs in a prize drawing fundraiser set April 13, benefiting the Montell School House, now a community building. The basket may be seen at LB Flowers and More, 101 Nueces St., Camp Wood.

Members of the Montell Country Club will host a fundraiser luncheon on April 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the old Montell School building, 27851 State Highway 55 in Montell.

The fundraiser will help maintain the 100-year-old former school, now used as a community building.

Organizers are offering lasagna, with a regular and a gluten-free option, a garden salad, garlic bread, dessert and bottled water for a $10 suggested donation.

There will be dine-in space, takeout options, and a noon delivery to Leakey Show Barn and Camp Wood City Park.

Organizers also plan a bake sale and prize drawing.

The prize drawing is for a basket dubbed “A Taste of Italy” and filled with items needed for an Italian meal, including two bottles of wine, pesto and pasta sauce, lemon hard candy, cheese, dried pasta, Italian soup and more.

Prize drawing tickets are available for $1 each, or six for $5. The basket is on display at LB Flowers and More in Camp Wood, and tickets are available there or at Montell School.

This year will be the 100th anniversary of the old school’s construction, and the country club members are holding several celebration events. On July 15, 2023, they held a “Roaring ‘20s Celebration.”

Once a two-room schoolhouse, the Montell School closed its doors in 1957 due to a decline in students. The former school has served as a community center for decades, with the country club working to preserve its history.

“It is our mission to keep alive its history and maintain the integrity of the building with these proceeds,” said Jenny Panunto, who chairs the committee organizing the events.

Donations via cash or check for meals may be made when meals are picked up. To order in advance for the Leakey and Camp Wood deliveries, call 281-682-8750 or 337-515-8214.
