George A. McDonald

George Allen McDonald, 87, of Cat Spring, formerly of Uvalde, died on Nov. 26, 2018, at his residence.

He was born on Jan. 14, 1931, in Poteet to Alice (Agan) and Lemuel “Lem” McDonald.

The family says he married the love of his life, Wanda Shoemake, on March 1, 1952, in San Antonio. As the couple prepared to start their married life, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served from 1952 until his discharge in 1954, during the Korean War.

McDonald was a skilled professional mechanic who loved his job, and the family says he could fix anything. Prior to his time as a soldier, he was employed as an aircraft engine mechanic with Slick Airways in San Antonio, and he returned there after his service.

He later worked for Automotive Research Association as a mechanic at their test track facility in Uvalde for several years. He was then employed as head of transportation at Southwest Texas Junior College for 17 years, until retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two brothers, Bill McDonald and Donald McDonald; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy McDonald, Margie McDonald and Nadine (Shoemake) Hargrove; three sisters, Pearl (McDonald) Romans, Marjorie (McDonald) Yow and Celestine (McDonald) Patillo; four brothers-in-law, George Romans, Rees Yow, Leonard Geyer and Johnny Jaworowski; father-in-law, J.R. “Tomie” Shoemake; and his mother-in-law, Eunice (Sadler) Shoemake.

He is survived by three children, Chandra “Sandy” (McDonald) Sobieski and husband, Kim, of Cat Spring, and Glenn McDonald and wife, Debbie, and George F. McDonald and wife, Lori, all of Uvalde; nine grandchildren, Cody Sobieski and wife, Kelly, of Katy, Kandis (Sobieski) Krueger and husband, Ryan, of Bellville, Megan McDonald of Austin, McClain McDonald of LaBelle, Melinda (McDonald) Korczynski and husband, Ron, and Morgann (McDonald) Crawford and husband Brad, all of Uvalde, Shawn McDonald of San Angelo, Tanner McDonald of Sour Lake and Taelyn McDonald of Alvin; 12 great-grandchildren; Jacob Sobieski, Lillian Sobieski, Anna Joy Sobieski, Kash Krueger, Kiley Krueger, Kate Krueger, Aubrey McDonald, McKenzie McDonald, Atlee Korczynski, Trace Korczynski, Charlie Korczynski and Case Crawford; two sisters, Dolly (McDonald) Eichman of Poteet, Fannie (McDonald) Jaworowski of Big Foot;  sister-in-law, Gail (Shoemake) Naegelin of Natalia; two brothers-in-law, Jimmy Shoemake of Devine and Tommy Ray Shoemake of Floresville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A military funeral service was held yesterday, Dec. 1, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary, followed by interment at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Glenn McDonald, McClain McDonald, Shawn McDonald, Tanner McDonald, Kim Sobieski and Cody Sobieski.

Honorary pallbearers were George F. McDonald, Jimmy Reavis, Harold Akers, Ryan Krueger, Brad Crawford and Ron Korczynski.
