Golf tourney winds up tomorrow


Second-day competition in the 70th-annual Uvalde Fourth of July golf tournament will take place today at Uvalde Memorial Golf Course.

Match-play action in the tournament got underway yesterday.

Tomorrow, play in this year’s big summer golfing event will conclude as a new championship flight winner will be crowned and first-place finishers in each of the other flights of the tournament will be determined.

Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of this year’s event.

The Uvalde Leader-News traveling trophy will be awarded to the championship flight winner.

Guy Goodspeed is the defending championship flight winner.

Last year, Goodspeed became the eighth player in the history of the 69-year tourney to win the event three times as he came from behind to win a one-up victory over Mike Hillis in last year’s title match.

After trailing Hillis throughout most of the championship match, Goodspeed won three of the final four holes to clinch the tourney title.

Prior to his win last year, Goodspeed won the tourney title in 2012 and 2013.

Before his win over Hillis, Goodspeed defeated 2015 tourney champion Edward Treviño, 3 and 2, in the semi-final match.

Goodspeed bested John Kozelsky, 3 and 2, in the quarter-final match.

Hillis entered the championship match against Goodspeed seeking his third Uvalde Fourth of July tournament title. He won the championship in 2010 and 2014.

Edward Treviño won third place in the Fourth of July tournament last season. He beat Scott Kulcak in a 20-hole marathon.

Besides Goodspeed, Hillis, and Treviño, some of the other top golfers entered in this year’s tournament are Clayton King, Cody Cruz, Ruben Escamilla, Jon Maxey, Swanson Smith and Phillip Thompson.

Some of the others in this year’s field of tourney players are Bert Aguilar, Craig Hayden, Bryan Kimble, Jay Arredondo, Roy P. Torres, Jack Matthiessen, Ernest Garza II, Carmelo Quiroz, George Cano, Juan Cruz, Trey Sklar, J.R. Costilla, Jay Salinas, Johnny Cruz, Bobby Bell, Bryan Gonzales, Robert Parrett, Charles Kone, Gary Moreno, Reynol Torres, Aaron Riggins, James Thompson, Mike Pierce, Mark Mireles, Tem Miller, Mike Smith, Justin Sandoval, Pete Treviño, and Nolan Langford.

Others entered in the tournament are David Sanchez, Terry Maxey, Blake Caesar, Merlin Maxey, Jimmy Muñoz, George Rodriguez, Richard Sanchez, F.X. O’Neil, Paul Kimble, Roy S. Torres, Bill Pennington, Robert Diaz, Anthony Burns, John Aviles, Willie Matak, Billy Jack Wright, Tim Smecker, Arturo Moreno, Bucky McNabb, Alan Wiebush, Bill Randolph, Adam Coronado, Greg Maxey, Max Harrah, John Flores, Randy Mauldin, Noe Cano, Rene Gonzales, Jay Wright, Gene Stroman, Garrett Cruce, Bill Jacob, Ben Schrutka, Clinton Baack, Chip Fly, Ben Reyes, Tommy Real, Terry Teer, Edward Stanfield, Darrell Martin, Danny Cano, I.C. In last year’s golf tournament, Will Orr won the championship flight consolation crown as he defeated John Kozelsky.

Pete Garza topped Gene Buckner for first place in the first flight.

Craig Hayden captured third place with a win over Juan Cruz, while Bobby Bell claimed consolation as he beat Jay Arredondo.

Brian Kimble placed first in the second flight with a match victory over Carmelo Quiroz, Mike Smith won over King Burney for third place and Aaron Riggins claimed consolation honors with a win over Cody Martin.

Adam Coronado beat Johnny Vasquez for the third-flight title.

Frank Garcia placed third with a win over Terry Maxey, while Joel Terrazas won consolation with a win over Bryon Turner.

Rene Gonzales won top honors in the fourth flight. He beat Albert Hernandez.

Jerry Bias finished third with his win over Ben Schrutka and Greg Maxey won the consolation title with a win over Clinton Baack Jr.
