Henrietta Pike

Henrietta “Peaches” Pike, 96, of Sugar Land, formerly of Uvalde, died on Dec. 3, 2022, at Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land.

Visitation will begin Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A chapel service will be held Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary, to be followed by a graveside service at the Rio Frio Cemetery.

She was born May 16, 1926, to Ethel Scott Whitaker in Searcy, Arkansas.

She and James Ira Pike Jr. were married on April 1, 1950, at the Uvalde County Courthouse after six dates. When they told the families, everyone thought it was an April Fools’ joke.

The family said Pike lived a full life. She grew up in Cline and attended the one room school house for her lower grades. She graduated from West Main High School in Uvalde. She had resided in Missouri City and Sugar Land since 2015.

She loved her roses and other flowers, always had multiple hummingbird feeders out, and fed the cottontail rabbits on her front porch in Uvalde. One of her favorite pastimes was hunting season. Her daughter said, “When she left us, the first thing that hit me was ‘it’s hunting season, and she is sitting in a blind at the ranch waiting for the next big buck to come by.’”

Pike is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Jeanne Mello and husband, David Matthew, of Fresno, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews great-nieces and great-nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband; mother; son, James Samuel Pike; two brothers, Ray Whitaker and S.E. Whitaker; and two sisters, Estalee Smith and Rosaline Carter.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Pike, Doug Whitaker, Steve Pike, Gene Whitaker, Randy Pike, and Issac Perez, with alternate Jim Sciba.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Leakey Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 250, Leakey, TX 78873, Frio Canyon EMS, Inc., P.O. Box 803, Leakey, TX 78873, and The Rio Frio Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 247, Rio Frio, TX 78879.
