Home fire spreads to neighboring residenceFree Access

A Uvalde firefighter engulfed in smoke hoses down a residential fire in the 100 block of West Daniel Street. The fire, which spread to a neighboring house, started Friday.

A residential fire on Uvalde’s north side spread to a neighboring home, filling the surrounding neighborhood in smoke on April 12.

Fernando Fernandez, public information officer for the Uvalde Police Department, said everyone inside the two homes made it out safely.

Firefighters and police responded to the 100 block of West Daniel Street, where a fire claimed a home owned by Darrell Deason and Kathy Williams midday Friday. The fire, which rendered that home visibly unlivable, spread to the house immediately next to it.

Deason and Williams, who have been together for more than a decade, were renting the home out to some friends who had about 10 puppies in the home, Deason said. They weren’t sure if the puppies got out of the house, but they confirmed the people renting the house exited safely.

The home, which belonged to Deason’s grandmother and later passed on to him, had been in his family since the 1940s, he said. Given the home was on the older side, he and Williams said they believed the fire was the result of outdated wiring.

With first responders still tending to the fire and residents experiencing shock, the fire’s cause was not officially confirmed as of 4:30 p.m.
