HSU offering cat adoption discount

This Mother’s Day weekend those looking to add a new furry family member can obtain a cuddly cat or kitten at a discount from the Humane Society of Uvalde during their “Feline Frenzy” event, saving money while changing a small life.

Due to an abundance of  cats and kittens, HSU is running an adoption special for felines through June 30.

Cats 6 months and older may be adopted for $25, and kittens under 6 months are now adoptable for a $50 fee. The fee includes all age appropriate vaccines, feleuk/fiv test, spay or neuter, deworming and being medicated for any flea issues.

Normally, the adoption fee is $45 for cats and $75 for kittens age 6 months or under.

Hours of operation, subject to change and volunteer availability, are Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

Heather Stunkel, who founded the Flights to Furever animal rescue program in 2013, now part of HSU, said the program currently has 15 felines being fostered by volunteers.

“Every spring we see an influx of puppies and kittens and 2021 has hit us hard. Requests every single day are flowing in to HSU and FTF,” Stunkel said.

She said though the program, which mainly focuses on canine rescue, has also worked with felines due in part to surging numbers. Stunkel said the program, which partners with numerous rescue and adoption organizations in Western New York, currently doesn’t have as big of an outlet for cats as they do for dogs.
