Jackie’s Canine Carnival, a fundraiser that honors the legacy of 9-year-old Jacklyn “Jackie” J. Cazares, who loved animals and wanted to grow up and be a veterinarian is set March 16 at the Uvalde County Fairplex.
Jackie, along with 18 of her classmates and two teachers, died as a result of the May 24, 2022, tragedy at Robb Elementary.
The day-long event slated from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. is geared towards pets, and attendees are encouraged to bring their furry friends.
Jackie’s Loving Hands, a non-profit Jackie’s family established to honor her memory, is organizing the event as a scholarship fundraiser for veterinary student. Jazmin Cazares, Jackie’s older sister and event organizer, said there will be a full slate of activities for dogs.
“We’re going to have a costume contest, cutest dog contest, and small dog races,” Cazares said. She said there will also be a donation-based dog treat buffet.
There will also be food and carnival games, like a cake walk. Cazares said they will also be selling doggie bandanas that read “I love my doggy,” in Jackie’s handwriting.
There will be a space for pet memorials, and Jackie’s family encourages attendees to bring a photo of their loved one for the installation.
A silent auction will offer an autographed baseball by Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck.
