James N. Gallaway

James N. Gallaway, 85, of Uvalde died Monday, Sept. 9, 2019, in San Antonio.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Uvalde. The Rev. Steve Peyton will officiate.

Gallaway was born on Oct. 22, 1933, in Uvalde to Annie Belle (Boales) and Dade Gallaway.

He graduated from Uvalde High School in 1951, having played football and track. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and worked for Central Power and Light for 45 years.

Gallaway is a past commander of the American Legion, and past president of the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce in Carrizo Springs.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce Gallaway, of Uvalde; daughters, Bonnie Turner and husband, Kim, of Knippa, and Pam Byrd and husband, Jimmy, of Tucson, Arizona; son, James N. “Jimbo” Gallaway and wife, Charree, of Lytle; nine grandchildren, Karen Vasquez, Holly Gardner, Stephanie Ayers, Dade Turner, Melinda Byrd, Trey Byrd, Justin Byrd, Charlesee James Gallaway, and Cutter Storm Gallaway; 11 great-grandchildren, Tanner Ahoyt, Taylor Ahoyt, Damien Vasquez, Rene Vasquez, Jared Gardner, Gage Gardner, Tate Gardner, Riley Bowling, Evan Bowling, Madison Bowling, and Brook Hershkowitz; two brothers-in-law, Billy Rector of Houston and Van Lilly of Franklin; nieces and nephews, David Lilly, Brenda Carter, Jani Anderson, Amy Coleman, Mike Gallaway, Sharon Beal, and Donnie Gallaway; and caregivers, Odie Trevino, Galo Jimenez, and Joe Ben Acosta.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clarence Gallaway and Charlie Gallaway; and sister, Virginia Lilly.

Cremation was under the direction of Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. Memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project or Salvation Army.
