Jeanette E. Smith

Jeanette “Jan” Evans Smith, 65, of Oklahoma, formerly of Uvalde, died on April 21, 2019, at her residence east of Comanche, Oklahoma.

She was born May 26, 1953, in San Antonio to Jeanne (Steeper) and Houston Evans.

She was born on a ranch and loved the ranching life. She rode horses and worked cattle from early on in life. She enjoyed growing up with her brothers and sisters in South Texas.

She graduated from Uvalde High School then attended Western Texas College in Snyder.

She met her future husband, JP Smith, at a rodeo, and they married on Dec. 30, 1971. The couple raised three children. They built a life around taking care of their family and enjoying time spent with each other every day.

Years later, after the children were grown, Smith opened Chisholm Trail Spirit Horse therapeutic riding center in Comanche, Oklahoma. There she gave horse riding lessons to children with disabilities and wounded soldiers. She loved helping people and seeing the joy horses brought to others.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren and attending their many events; she was very proud of her family.

She is survived by her husband, of Oklahoma; three children, Justin Smith and wife, Angela, of Duncan, Oklahoma, Jody Smith and wife, Dana, of Ratliff City, Oklahoma, and Jacy Dobbins and husband, Nic, of Comanche, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Jackson Smith, Kaydence Smith, Ashton Brown, Dalton Brown, Brady Dobbins, Cooper Dobbins and Berkley Dobbins; her mother, of Uvalde; sister, Jean Evans of Norman, Oklahoma; father-in-law, Alton Smith, of Comanche, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Sandra Smith, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; niece Haley Greenough and husband, Clinton, of Oklahoma; and three nephews, Nick Smith, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dee Evans and family of Hondo, and Cole Evans and family of Uvalde.

Smith was preceded in death by her father, Houston Evans; and two brothers, Dunn Evans and Jim Houston Evans.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church, followed by interment at Fairlawn Cemetery, both located in Comanche, Oklahoma.

Pallbearers were Kenny Woods, Tooter Waites, Larry Mikel, Bill Bunn Jr., Clinton Greenough and Matt Roberson.

Honorary pallbearers were Dee Evans and Cole Evans.

Arrangements were under the direction of Comanche Funeral Home of Oklahoma.
