John Hicks, a Legacy

John David Hicks moved into heaven from his home in Montell, Texas, on Feb. 16, 2024, to join those loved ones who preceded him.

Since there are dominoes up there, he is shuffling a hand and laughing with all the relatives and friends who were waiting for him.

John began his life in the bedroom of a house in Vance, Texas, on June 10, 1934.

He was the fourth child of Laura Burleson Hicks and William Alfred Hicks. He attended school in Uvalde and then went to Southwest Texas Junior College, after which he graduated from Texas A&I in Kingsville with a Bachelor of Science in physics.

After university he joined the Army and was stationed in White Sands, New Mexico. John met his future wife, Barbara Marie Franks, of Corpus Christi, at the Friday night dance in Garner State Park, and they subsequently married on April 22, 1957, to begin a rather large family of sons.

John began his career in the oil business with Humble Oil, working in the field on a seismograph crew in southern New Mexico.

He and Barbara eventually moved back to south Texas with several stops along the way, until he was promoted to an office job as a geophysicist for Exxon. Their next stop was Houston with five boys, until Brian was born soon after to make it an even six. A few years after that, they moved to Cypress, which is a rural suburb north of Houston. Around this time, John changed careers and began a very successful transition to real estate, forming Hicks and Associates Realty.

After “retiring” John and Barbara moved to the Nueces Canyon and his brokerage became Nueces Canyon Real Estate.

John is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara, four of their six sons, and their families. He was preceded in death by his third son Randall in 2019 and fifth son Perry in 2023.

His remaining children include Don and wife, Cyndi, of Burleson, Mike and wife, Deborah, of Barksdale, Randall’s widow, Cyndi, of Fulshear, Paul and wife, Sherene, of Tomball, Perry’s widow, Kathy, of Barksdale, and Brian and wife, Louise, of Jourdanton. Other survivors include grandchildren too numerous to count and many great- grandchildren.

John was also preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Laura Hicks, his brother Jimmy Hicks and sisters Naomi Casey and Mary Beth Moutrey.

Pallbearers were Daniel Hicks, Jacob Hicks, David Hicks, Matthew Hicks, Luke Standley, and Aaron Hicks
