King downs Coyotes in basketball


The Kinsgville King Brahmas used their superior height and strength to overpower the Uvalde Coyotes as posted a 61-45 win in Class 4A Area basketball playoff competition at Poteet on Feb. 25.

Down 15-9 at the end of the first period, the Coyotes battled back to cut the scoring deficit to 27-23 by the end of the first half.

But King outscored the Coyotes, 16-9, in the third period and outpointed the Uvaldeans, 18-13, during the final period en route to their 16-point victory. Four players scored in double figures for the Coyotes, including Daniel Perez with 12 points, and Joseph Flores, Gabriel Larralde,and Isaiah Rodriguez each with 10 points. Brian Reading had two points and Jarrett Hernandez made one point.

Nate Garcia and Kenny Jensen led Kingsville in scoring with 27 points and 14 points, respectively.

With the win, King earned a spot against the San Antonio Young Men’s Leadership Academy Lions in the regional quarter-finals Tuesday, while the Coyotes ended their basketball season with a 11-19 season record.

For UHS seniors Brian Reading, Cinco Flores, and Gianni Perez, the playoff game was their final game in a Coyotes uniform.

The other 10 members of Coach Oyola’s 2021-22 varsity roster will return next season to form the nucleus for the 2022-23 varsity ball club.
