La Vernia Bears top Coyotes, 4-2

The Uvalde Coyotes lost a 4-2 district soccer decision Monday evening against the La Vernia Bears at the Uvalde High School soccer field.

Daniel Perez scored on an unassisted goal from about 15 yards out less than eight minutes into the match.

La Vernia tied the score with a goal that came with 59 seconds remaining in the first half. The Bears then scored less than a minute into the second half to take the scoring lead. They later scored two more goals. Nathan Valdez scored the other Uvalde goal.  Coach George Menchaca’s Coyotes are now 2-6 in district play and 2-11 for the season. They hold a slight lead over the Fox Tech Buffaloes in the race for the fourth playoff slot.

The Coyotes will wind up district play with a road match against the Poteet Aggies on March 16, while they are scheduled to host the San Antonio Fox Tech on March 19.

Prior to the La Vernia match, the Coyotes lost a pair of 3-2 district soccer decisions. Last Friday night, the Coyotes held a 2-1 scoring advantage at halftime, but the district-leading Pleasanton Eagles scored twice in the second half to win the match.

Pleasanton scored first in the ball game, but the Coyotes tied the score when Joseph Pedraza connected on a kick from 15 yards out. Later in the first half, Pedraza scored on a penalty kick to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead.

Pleasanton tied the game with a close-range goal at the 32:34 mark of the second half. The Eagles scored what proved to be the winning goal on a close-range penalty kick with 11:45 left in the match.
