Voting process

This is the first letter-to-the-editor I have ever written. I’m writing it because I just want to say thanks to the Uvalde County election officials for their work on this year’s General Election.

My wife and I voted on the second day of early voting. Since we are both in high-risk groups for serious problems should we contract COVID-19, we showed up at the Sgt. Willie De Leon Civic Center with some apprehension. But our apprehensions were alleviated as soon as we entered the civic center.

There was plenty of space for social distancing and every other suggested precaution for the safety of voters and workers has been taken. I was also impressed by the number of poll workers on hand to facilitate the voting process. Thanks to all the workers who have stepped up to assist during this year’s highly unusual election cycle.

There is another week of early in-person voting before Election Day on Nov. 3. But whether you vote in person early or on Election Day, I believe you can do so with assurance that it will be a safe environment for exercising your most precious right, the right to vote.

Thanks again to all county election officials and poll workers for all their preparation in designing and implementing a safe and efficient voting process.

Happy memories

I really enjoyed Allene Mandry’s article in the Sunday Oct. 18, 2020, issue of the Uvalde Leader-News. It brought back so many memories for me. I clearly remember most of the things that were mentioned by the many people who told about their memories of Morrison’s dime store. I often bought toys and pocket knives in that store when I was a kid back in the late 1930s and early ’40s.

I did, however, notice that the caption under two of the photos on page 15 must have been transposed. The caption under the larger photo says it was obviously taken in 1976, but the cars shown were made in the 1930s. The smaller photo, below on the right, is labeled as Barnhill’s Drug Store, but shows cars that were made in the 1960s and ’70s. It took me a couple of minutes to figure this out, but-thanks for the memories.
