Library hoping for windfall on Giving Tuesday

On Tuesday, El Progreso Memorial Library has the opportunity to rake in up to $50,000 in donations that could be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Library director Mendell Morgan said credit card fees are being waived, meaning 100 percent of gifts will benefit the library.

The donations this year will mean even more to Morgan than usual, as a successful fundraiser is his birthday wish.

For donations made beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match up to $50,000 per non-profit group, for a total expenditure of $2 million.

The library will use the money raised for general operations, maintenance, new books and other educational resources.

The funding will offset the $10,000 budget cut implemented by the city of Uvalde.

“Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving,” reads the Giving Tuesday website. “Since its inaugural year in 2012, #GivingTuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy with events throughout the year and a growing catalog of resources.”
